Go West, Young Man: Key West, Baby!
December 3, 2007
Here is a great story from my hometown paper - the Philadelphia Inquirer, about an enterprising ( or actually - an anti-enterprising) guy who decided to take it easy…..Really easy…:-) He's heading to Key West for the Winter in his converted 17 foot long Uhaul truck that he lives in while working as a bicycle cabbie in Paradise! Actually a pretty funny story about a very unique kid with a decidedly Key West outlook on life! Read the full story at the link below:
Simplifying life until it just fits into a box truckHis dream is less work, more free time.By Lini S. KadabaInquirer Staff WriterChris Harne is either bonkers or brilliant. The 25-year-old middle-class suburbanite who says he doesn't care for material consumption has a plan to live for free, or very little:Set up house in a box truck. In jeans and a used, 50-cent Wawa hoodie, Harne last week put the final touches on a secondhand, 17-foot U-Haul truck with 175,000 miles that he has recycled into a one-room domicile, complete with sink, easy chair and front porch. He plans to call it home while he winters and works as a bicycle cabbie in Key West, Fla.On Friday, Harne backed down the long driveway of his parents' spacious Kennett Square home, where he'd been staying comfortably since summer, and headed south, stopping to pick up a driving companion he met on Craigslist.

Hey - if you thought some of the strange sights during Fantasy Fest 2007 were bizarre, how about Robert the Doll and his unsettling affect on this easily spooked island writer. I'm going to be honest with you - if this stuff scares you, this ain't a good time of year to be in Key West. I saw a 82 year old woman last week on Duval Street with enough tattoos to make Angelina Jolie Blush - and that was all from behind. I shudder to think what visual delights were waiting had I hung around long enough for her to turn around. But all in all - this is one scary looking doll. You can read the whole story at the link below:
Key West's most dangerous character The Halloween scene can't be beat, and the island's ghostly reputation lives in a model citizenOctober 28, 2007Story and Photos by ELLEN CREAGERFREE PRESS TRAVEL WRITERKEY WEST, Fla. — I've always hated little dolls that come alive. I'm terrified of Chucky, that horrible movie doll. I was scared witless by that murderous little Talking Tina in "The Twilight Zone" TV show — ("My name is Talking Tina, and I am going to kill you …").So you can imagine how hard my heart is pounding as I approach the plastic display box of Robert the Doll at Key West's East Martello Museum. Robert, more than 100 years old, is wearing a sailor suit. His pockmarked and chipped face stares blankly in the dim, damp brick hall.
