April 25, 2008

A nice article from fishingworld.com on the Key West World Sailfish Competition - some good drama, nice competition and a killer catch ( and  A LOT of CASH!) for Captain Leon's Rock Star entourgage ( from just down the block in Miami..:-).  secret-surf.gifYou can read the whole story at the link below:

Captain Scott Leon’s Rock Star team lived up to its name, staging a remarkable comeback Saturday, April 19, to win the $100,000 top prize at the World Sailfish Championship in the Florida Keys. After beginning the third and final day of fishing in fifth place, the team won on earliest time of final release after three boats ended the tournament with 15 sailfish releases.Leon’s team added six sailfish releases to their nine releases posted during the first two fishing days. But Rock Star’s Miami-based contingent — including boat owner Jorge Piedra, Jorge Ramirez, Rudy Espinosa, Rudy Espinosa Jr., Ovi Vento, Leo Lombera, Henry Jimenez and Kyle Sherman of Miami — endured several nerve-wracking hours after team Jichi reported its 15th release at 11:37 a.m.At 12:33 p.m., Captain Mike Dinnen’s Vitamin Sea Too team reported its 15th release."We came out early in the morning and caught six fish before 10:30 a.m. that put us in the lead," said Rock Star’s Jimenez. "We didn’t catch anything for the rest of the day, but our lead held up."

Key West Identity Crisis: Who are We Exactly Anyway?

April 23, 2008

Key West locals, officials and touristy minded business owners are all battling over just what kind of image the Conch Republic should put on in the days, months and years to come.  While many believe the days of the "duval crawl" and beer splashed, wild nights downtown should be coming to an end, others believe that curtailing the craziness would be the first nail in the proverbial coffin that shuts down the attraction to this southernmost siesta.  Even the chickens have come under attack as the good ole' Mayor wants to find a way to bus em' up and ship em out…but somewhere close like Central Florida where we could all stop by and say hello once in a while.  Better get an alarm clock folks….and things may be changing here in Paradise.  Who knows if for the better.  You can read the whole story at the NPR link below.

Duval Street in Key West is famous for its open-air bars, strip clubs and raunchy T-shirt shops. As the city has gone more upscale in recent years, some residents and business owners are embarrassed by the seedy, beer-soaked main drag. But can you clean up the street without sacrificing its end-of-the-road, anything-goes appeal?
