Key West Crime Report: Hobo Turned Artist' Busted On the Job

March 30, 2008

The Key West Citizen is always an absolute hot bed for the kind of crime stories you can't find ANYWHERE else in the USA other than in the Conch Republic……and this one is no exception.  John Remillaed, aka "Hobo" was arrested on Wednesday after cutting palm fronds from a local home for the purpose of weaving them into decorative baskets to hock to the touristas downtown.  He also claimed, in his own defense, that the palms were far healthier as a result of his volunteer landscaping…which leads me to think that he may not be half wrong.  Hey - who wouldn't mind some free tree trimming from an ecologically conscious hobo?  I would.  Free John T-shirts are in the process of being printed up now.  You can read the whole story at the link below..:-)

A 41-year-old homeless man with a knife was arrested Wednesday after admitting he was cutting palm fronds from an Olivia Street home to weave into the form of flowers for tourists on Duval Street, reports say.John William Remillaed was charged with a felony count of trespassing with an armed weapon after the homeowner called police. Remillaed reportedly had been in the area before, and told police he had even trimmed the palms in the past, without permission, and that they were healthier because of it, reports say.Remillaed, who's listed in police reports as a "hobo," said he was going to take the palms to weave flowers for the girls downtown, saying he had applied for a license to weave but didn't have the supplies to do so, reports say.The homeowner in the 1200 block of Olivia St. told police that the only way anyone could access his property was by scaling the fence or going through an electric gate, reports say.
