Breaking News - New Key West beachside resort can withstand 205 mph winds

November 26, 2007

Here is an interesting article from a Trinidad Newspaper on the Beachside Resort and Conference Center….Now, I'm not 100% sure on their picture selection, can somebody give me a little insight into what exactly this scene depicts?  1) The Beachside Resort Center or 2) the Fact that it is built to withstand 205 mile an hour winds?  Or is this just the only Key West pic they had on hand when they decided to go with the story?  Just asking the tough questions, folks.  That's why I get the BIG bucks. You can read the whole story at the link below.

More Trouble in Paradise: Mo Money Mo Problems

November 25, 2007

Here is ( yet another) regional newspaper, this one in Kansas City lending coverage to the Key West rich/poor/tourist/local problems in paradise sort of story.  I guess this is news in Kansas City.  Or maybe just a good excuse for a reporter to spend a week in Paradise trying to figure it all out..:-)  Either way, you can read the whole story at the link below.

Florida Keys at a crossroads between locals and the richBy ADRIAN SAINZ The Associated PressKEY WEST, Fla. | The sights and sounds at Schooner Wharf drip with Key West attitude: Sunburned tourists lounge near a marina, savoring drinks alongside locals wearing tank tops and sandals. A singer warbles, “I’d rather be here, drinking a beer, than freezing my a– off up north.”Different sounds emerge from behind the bar known as “The last little piece of Old Key West” — the sound of bulldozers working on a 32-unit luxury gated community. Pre-construction prices for spacious three-bedroom suites start at $1.87 million. The Harbor House development will attract an upscale clientele seeking an island lifestyle. But its exclusivity clearly upsets some people here. Just read the writing scrawled on a retaining wall: “Stop the Madness.” “Money Talks.” “Eat the Rich.”The Florida Keys are at a crossroads, beset by shortages of high-paying jobs and affordable housing, rising property taxes and insurance, and environmental concerns. Yet the move to “upscale” the Keys is gaining steam, a sign of growth that’s commonly experienced by tourism-dependent communities. Such growth is leaving many Keys residents feeling priced out or ignored.“It seems like it’s paradise, but at the same time it’s an economic hardship for the residents,” said U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Miami, who represents Monroe County. “That leads to this kind of twisted, complex relationship, sort of a marriage in therapy … The Keys community and the tourists are always in couples therapy.”

More Crazy Key West Characters:

November 3, 2007

chimney.jpgHey - if you thought some of the strange sights during Fantasy Fest 2007 were bizarre, how about Robert the Doll and his unsettling affect on this easily spooked island writer.   I'm going to be honest with you - if this stuff scares you, this ain't a good time of year to be in Key West.  I saw a 82 year old woman last week on Duval Street with enough tattoos to make Angelina Jolie Blush - and that was all from behind.  I shudder to think what visual delights were waiting had I hung around long enough for her to turn around.  But all in all - this is one scary looking doll.  You can read the whole story at the link below:

Key West's most dangerous character The Halloween scene can't be beat, and the island's ghostly reputation lives in a model citizenOctober 28, 2007Story and Photos by ELLEN CREAGERFREE PRESS TRAVEL WRITERKEY WEST, Fla. — I've always hated little dolls that come alive. I'm terrified of Chucky, that horrible movie doll. I was scared witless by that murderous little Talking Tina in "The Twilight Zone" TV show — ("My name is Talking Tina, and I am going to kill you …").So you can imagine how hard my heart is pounding as I approach the plastic display box of Robert the Doll at Key West's East Martello Museum. Robert, more than 100 years old, is wearing a sailor suit. His pockmarked and chipped face stares blankly in the dim, damp brick hall.
