Gay Life & Key West: Free to Be You and Me
April 21, 2007
If there is a place that exemplifies what tolerance and acceptance looks like - on it's best day, Key West might very well be that spot. I remember my first visit to Key West 20 years ago as collegiate kid coming from a small town school in an even smaller state - and seeing things I had really never come across in my daily existence as a beer drinking, fraternity house loving, straight kid who had never much experience with those whose lifestyle choices greatly differed from mine.
But - as I grew older, and with each successive trip to this place I love - I found the diversity and cultural mix a huge part of the draw. And the people - by and large, whatever their positions, politics or lifestyle - inviting just the same.
"No Closet Space" - a celebration of the freedoms that Key West exudes in her most fundamental fabric - is to begin production. Check out the full story at the link below:
Gay History Film To Begin Production In Key West, Reports FLV HostingFor Immediate ReleaseKEY WEST, Fla./EWORLDWIRE/April 19, 2007 — "I didn't come out of the closet, I came out of an armoire," quipped over 40-year Key West resident Larry Harvey in a pre-interview for the upcoming film, No Closet Space, the History of Gay Key West.No Closet Space, the History of Gay Key West will be the first-ever film about the impact the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community has had on the City of Key West, and, in turn, about Key West's impact on American LGBT history in general."There is quite a story here," says local filmmaker Tim Dahms. "Key West just wouldn't be Key West without the LGBT community, and American LGBT History in general wouldn't be nearly as rich and interesting if not for KeyWest."Notables such as Tennessee Williams, Gore Vidal, Truman Capote and Leonard Bernstein spent leisure time there, and their stories are the stuff of local legend."In my research for this film, I've found many, many people who have lived much of the rich LGBT history of the island and who have wonderful stories to tell," added Dahms, "and they tell them with such color and panache."

More Key West Cowboys: Coke in the Conch Part Two

I'm sorry - I know this isn't funny. Crime isnt' supposed to be funny - drugs aren't funny either….But - the drug busts in Old Town ( well - all across town for that matter) always seem to radiate a bit of a comic sheen. Maybe it's me. Or those two years of Criminal Justice classes I took back in college. Either way - as the bumper sticker says - sometimes you just have to say no..:-)
Just say noKEY WEST — Two men in the 400 block of Greene Street about 3:30 a.m. Monday allegedly gave a police officer permission to search them, apparently forgetting they each had a bag of cocaine on them. The officer responded to a report of a "suspicious person" in the area and met Joseph Dewey, 22, and Gerald Palmer, 24, both of Layton. They told the officer they didn't have anything illegal on them when he asked. He then asked if he could search them, reportedly telling them they had the right to refuse, but they didn't. Both men went to jail on charges of possessing cocaine.
