Key West to Cuba: The Old Man By the Sea Lives On
March 26, 2007
It's really hard to miss the homage paid to Ernest Hemingway when visiting ( or living in) Key West. The references are everywhere, both obscure and overt. The Hemmingway home is a huge tourist attraction, the Hemmingway cats often larger in legend than real life. Every year the "Papa" look alike contest draws Hemmingway hacks from both near and far….:-) His literary legend extends far beyond his prose alone, for many - Jimmy Buffeet aside - no name is more synonymous and symbolic of life in the Florida Keys more so than Ernest Hemingway. (my spelling mistakes seem glaringly obvious now..
What many people don't realize - is the great affinity Hemmingway shared with Cuba - the many years he called her home - and maybe equally as striking, the perserverence of the love the Cuban country had and still holds for this American writing legend.
A great article below captures some of that - courtesy of the Pittstburg Post Gazette and Bob Hoover.
